Unidentified Skull - HELP by xDoglate Unidentified Skull - HELP by xDoglate
So I've been meaning to get this up, here, for help on what skull this is. I mean, I'm pretty sure it's canine, like some dog, but I wonder what breed. A rat terrier is closest so far, but it still doesn't seem just right. You've, uh, got my hand, there for comparison lol My hand is about six inches from the wrist to the tip of my middle finger.

My older brother found the skull in the woods of Kentucky. There's no known cause of death from what I've got, so who knows how it died. Also, my apologies for the bad photo quality; I don't feel like getting my camera out and looking for a good spot with enough light.

Thanks!

Pomeranian? Or a young dachshund maybe?

I think Yorkie and Poodle have come closest, so far. A dachshund is too flat on the forehead, and the snout on my skull is a bit too long for chihuahua breeds. Thanks for the suggestions, though :)

Ahh i never thought of a yorkie. Poodle does look most similar to it.

I agree. The cranium looks pretty much the same, though.

That actually looks really close, but something seems a bit off. Of course, there are different characteristics with different individuals. Thanks for the suggestion :)

Small breed domestic dog. Probably a toy breed given the large size of its forehead and orbitals. Unfortunately, IDing a breed by skull alone is nearly impossible even for trained forensic veterinarians. They can tell you if it's a domestic dog but the exact breed might never be known.

Oh yes, that's what I assume, but actually, some of the suggestions I've gotten come pretty close!

Maybe a dachshund? Probably not I guess, the eye spots look like they might be too big. Good luck!

Yes, that is true, plus I think that there's too much of a slope of the forehead for my skull. Thanks for the suggestion :)

Its not a coyote, fox, nor raccoon. This is the skull of a domestic dog. Exact breed is going to be near impossible to determine as there are so many mixed breeds/mutts out there. But this appears to be a toy breed/small breed, likely of the terrier family.

Yes, indeed. I was thinking either a toy breed or perhaps a puppy. Is there an obvious difference between puppy skulls and adult skulls?

Yes.

On younger animals, including puppies, sutures wouldn't be fused...as this skull appears to have fused sutures. Especially over the cranium itself, they seem pretty fused. So I strongly doubt this was a young animal. Sutures, and teeth are the easiest ways to get an idea on the animal's age.

That's what I was thinking. I know it's hard to tell without any other pieces or bones and all. I think "terrier" is as close as I'll get lol

Nope, not a raccoon. I have a coon skull and it's much different. Still, this skull's nose is much too narrow, and there's too much of a slope on the fore head. Most likely some kind of dog, probably a mutt  lol Thanks anyway :)
